Description

The Riverwalk Trail offers a quiet alternative to the busy Riverside Avenue path. The trail is marked by both WVPD and Burlington Wildway blazes. Please stay on the trail, as the adjacent land is not park property. From Intervale Road, the trail drops down off the bank, using several flights of stairs to drop down to the Winooski River's edge. It's here that you have a chance to see beavers or otters that live along the banks. The trail continues on in the floodplain where work is being done to remove invasive Japanese knotweed. Near the middle of the trail, a landslide has covered up the trail and the soil remains unstable. It is dangerous and not recommended to walk on the landslide pile. On the Salmon Hole side, the trail connects to a couple different trails that climb back up the bluff to the Riverside Avenue Path which connects to the small parking lot.

This trail is part of the larger Burlington Wildway Trail which begins at Salmon Hole Park and goes through the Intervale to Ethan Allen Homestead and Ethan Allen Park.

Trail Tips

Be Considerate of Other Visitors
Yield to pedestrians on multi-use trails. Warn others that you are passing from behind with a friendly "Excuse me" and a smile.

Trailhead Information

Western trailhead: The trail begins off of the east side of Intervale Road, a short way downhill from Riverside Avenue and Kismayo Kitchen. There is no parking lot, but parking is available at the Intervale Center's lot at the bottom of the hill on the left past the bulk material area of Gardener's Supply.

Eastern trailhead: Park at a small dirt parking lot 200 yards south of the bridge to Winooski on Riverside Avenue. Walk away from Winooski past the entrance sign and turn right off the path to descend into Salmon Hole Park. Go downhill and stay generally left to find the Riverwalk trail which borders the river. You can also access the trail from the Riverside Avenue path coming from either direction, and turning down the gravel trails into Salmon Hole Park.
