The famous Smugglers’ Notch is a narrow pass through the Green Mountains. Lined with 1,000-foot cliffs, the winding road is closed in winter. In the earlier days, only a footpath and trail for horses existed here.

VT Dept. Forests, Parks & Recreation District 4: Barre DistrictThere are several trailheads along VT-108 that access trails in Smugglers' Notch.
VT-108 is not plowed in the winter. The Barnes Camp Visitor Center parking is plowed. On the west side of the notch, parking is along the road. Please do not block traffic.
There is an active bear situation at Sterling Pond, focusing around the shelter area. Please do not leave food or food scraps out and practice the standard policy of carrying out what you carry in. Closely control children and dogs. Bear sightings can be reported to the onsite Green Mountain Club Caretaker stationed at the shelter. Discharging bear spray if the bear is within 25’-30’ of you can help train the bear to stay out of the area. Techniques and tips for using bear spray are described in this link.
It is mud season in Vermont. Even if a trail is marked as open, pay attention to trail conditions. If you encounter mud or ice, turn around. Come back once the trail has had time to dry out.
One or more trails in this system is currently closed due to muddy or wet conditions. Please help to protect our trails by not walking on them when they are soft and easily damaged. Learn more.
If any trails are open, they will be listed on the Details tab.
