Description

The Rena Calkins Trail, named for the last working dairy farmer in Burlington, is a flat trail that follows the banks of the Winooski River. The trail is well marked with red hexagon blazes, Intervale signs, and Burlington Wildway blazes. Much of the trail is wooded and can be muddy and buggy in the spring and summer, so come prepared! Multiple spur connect parking areas along Intervale Road with the trail, and the Burlington Wildway blazes will lead you north to McKenzie Park and the Ethan Allen Homestead, or to up Intervale Road to the south to connect with the Riverwalk to Salmon Hole Park. Highlights of the trail include the pond at the Intervale Center trailhead which is a picturesque spot to relax and maybe see painted turtles, and the wild stretch of the river where otters and beavers are sometimes spotted playing on the sandbars and calm waters.

If you'd like to explore more of this area, check out the Intervale Trail, a 2-mile trail that goes past farms, fields, and the river, following a dirt road and paths from one end of the Intervale to the other.
