Description

From the trailhead at the parking lot just east of Big Pond on VT-9, follow the gravel road past several camps/houses northward. There is no parking on the gravel road. In half a mile, a power line is reached where there are views to the east and west. About two and a quarter miles in, the trail encounters a "junction", actually an old turnaround. Stay straight to Little Pond. To make a loop, after visiting the pond, return to the junction and head east and then south to take the Pine Valley snowmobile trail to VT-9, then return a half a mile along the road. (Note: While hiking is permitted on all Forest Service trails, the Pine Valley snowmobile trail is not maintained for hiking, so less than ideal trail conditions may be encountered.)

Longer hikes can be made by heading southwest on the spur trail between the turnaround junction and Little Pond. This footpath connects to the Appalachian/Long Trail in about a ½ mile. From there the AT/LT heads south (left) to Porcupine Lookout in about 0.25 mile, or heads north (right) to Little Pond Lookout in about 1.0 mile. Nice views are attained at these vantage points.
