The trailhead is accessed via a short spur past the boulders at the end of USFS Road 67, across Sucker Brook on a USFS bridge. The Sucker Brook Trail trailhead is on the left past the bridge. The trail enters the Joseph Battell Wilderness, following old logging roads west. It ascends gently at first, and then more steadily. The trail reaches the Sucker Brook Shelter 0.9 miles. Past the shelter, it climbs to the junction with the Long Trail, 1 mile from the trailhead at the end of USFS Road 67.
