The Rattle River Trail/Appalachian Trail follows a logging road south on the east side of the stream. The trail passes the Rattle River Shelter at 1.7 miles, at which a spur trail descends to ledges and pools in the river. The trail crosses the river a few times, then begins to climb more steadily. After passing a small cascade, the trail climbs steeply up rock steps away from the river to the top of the ridge and the junction with the Kenduskeag Trail, 4.3 miles from the trailhead.
Heading east from this junction, the Kenduskeag Trail travels 1.3 miles over knobs and ledges and through alpine bogs on bog bridging to the summit of Shelburne Moriah Mountain (elevation 3,735 feet). There are excellent views from the flat ledges of the summit.
