The Waterbury Trail takes hikers up through C.C. Putnam State Forest to the summit of Mount Hunger. The ascent is steady and as it nears the top, the trail turns to open rock that requires some scrambling. The summit is a popular hiking destination and is also accessible from the Middlesex Trail. At the summit, both trails connect to the Skyline Trail, which connects Mount Hunger to Mount Worcester and Stowe Pinnacle.
Although Mount Hunger is not the highest of the five peaks in the Worcester Range, it is by far the most popular. Its bald summit affords spectacular views to the east, south, and west. Almost every peak in the Green Mountain Range is visible including Camel’s Hump, Killington, and Mt. Mansfield on its northern end.

From Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury Center, turn left to drive south on VT-100, then make the next left onto Hollow Road and continue for 0.3 miles. Turn left onto Howard Avenue, then left again onto Maple Street and continue for 0.2 miles. Turn right onto Loomis Hill Road and continue for 1.9 miles, then continue straight when the road turns into Sweet Farms Road. The trailhead and parking is 1.5 miles down Sweet Farms Road. It is plowed in the winter.
The Waterbury Trail is closed until further notice due to Sweet Farm Road closure.
It is mud season in Vermont. Even if a trail is marked as open, pay attention to trail conditions. If you encounter mud or ice, turn around. Come back once the trail has had time to dry out.
