Description

Walk quietly and you may see a deer, mink or osprey within the peaceful floodplain forest. Great blue herons wade along the shoreline looking to snack on fish, frogs, and tadpoles. Watch your step—and save a leopard frog!

The Jeep Trail is only open August through April in order to protect nesting bird habitat.

Rules and Regulations - 

  • The refuge is a day use facility only and does not allow overnight camping.
  • Pets must be leashed and under the control of the owner while on the refuge.
  • The refuge is closed from dusk until dawn unless otherwise permitted by refuge manager.
  • This trail is closed during deer rifle and muzzleloader hunting season

Trailhead Information

From Swanton, head northwest on VT-78 for 3.4 miles. Louie's Landing boat launch and parking area will be on the right. To get to the trail, walk up the gated gravel Mac's Bend Road for one mile to Mac's Bend boat launch. The Jeep Trail leaves from the boat launch parking area.

Mac's Bend Road is open to traffic September through December.
