This trail was built and is maintained by the Richmond Trails (formerly Recreation Path) Committee. It starts in Richmond and runs along the banks of the Winooski River all the way to Jonesville. Trail is used regularly by hikers, local residents walking their dogs, horseback riders, and bicyclists. The trail is on privately owned land, and on land belonging to to the Richmond Conservation Commission and the The Nature Conservancy. Two short sections require use of Cochran Road. Some sections are subject to seasonal flooding, and therefore the trail is not year-round passable.

A portion of this trail crosses land that was recently purchased and protected by The Nature Conservancy. Remove no plants, animals, artifacts, or rocks. Camping is not allowed. Build no fires and leave no litter. Take care not to track the seeds of invasive plants on boots and clothing. Currently this area is under threat from invasive species.

The famous Round Church, a popular Vermont tourist attraction, is just down the road. The trail parallels Cochran Road (which is part of the Cross Vermont Trail). It passes by the Cochran Ski area, created by the Cochran family that boasts two Olympic medal holders.

Visit busy trailheads mid-week to avoid crowds.

Trailhead Information

Take I-89 to the Richmond exit (Exit 11). Get on Route 2 going east. Once in Richmond, turn right at the first traffic light onto Bridge Street. From the center of Richmond at the traffic light go down Bridge St. toward the Round Church. Go over the Winooski bridge and just past the Round Church green, turn left on Cochran Road. There are three ways to access the trail from Cochran Road.

  1. Just across the street from a small cemetery (parking for one or two cars on cemetery side or at Volunteer's Green in town).
  2. Midway along the trail at the canoe access about 1.5 miles from the Round Church (parking in the canoe access parking lot).
  3. Wheeler Lane, 3 miles from the Round Church or 0.25 miles from the bridge in Jonesville. (This starts along the Huntington River and leads down the Winooski and the trail goes west. Parking is across from the Jonesville post office.)

Note that there are also two short sections where the trail requires the use of Cochran Road, as indicated on the trail map.
