Description

The Burtt's Orchard Trail is loop hike through an active farm and orchard. Over its approximate 1.5-mile length, the trail passes through a mixed agricultural landscape of orchards, fields, woods, and pastures, and pays a visit to the Burtt's farm store and sugar house. During the summer and fall picking seasons, this is a very popular destination for locals and visitors alike.

The trail starts at the kiosk located near the farm store and picnic shelter. The trail proceeds on a flat path adjacent to the main orchard containing dozens of apple varieties. At the end of the orchard path, the trail passes through a latched steel gate. Please close and latch the gate behind you. The trail proceeds across a pasture up a gentle hill, then around the edge of the pasture along a boundary fence to a bench offering scenic views toward the farm and orchards. Beyond the first bench, the trail enters a woodlot and winds gently up hill toward the upper pasture. The path travels along the pasture adjacent to an old woods road. Local legend says key scenes from the Alfred Hitchcock film The Trouble with Harry were filmed along this road just off the trail.

The path continues between the upper pasture and the sugar bush, offering amazing westerly views toward the Green Mountains. Additional benches are provided on this stretch to rest and take in the views.

The path begins to descend toward Cabot Plains Road before taking a turn and skirting the edge of a farm field. The path proceeds around the sugar house, crosses Cabot Plains Road, continues on a mowed path parallel to the road, then recrosses at the farm store and parking area. Returning to the kiosk completes the loop.

Other Information

  • Some sections of the trail, particularly in the wooded areas, may become muddy during late winter and early spring. Please stay off the trail during this time.
  • The trail often follows a steel mesh fence separating pastured animals from hikers. Please do not climb over or on the fence.
  • Dogs are welcome on the trail but must be kept out of the orchard.
