The trail begins along a snowmobile trail, which it follows through the woods. At 1.3 miles the hiking trail breaks off from the snowmobile trail, uphill to the right. It continues up and around the north side of the summit of Bald Mountain, passing through conifer forests and stands of birch, under the impressive cliffs of Bald Mountain's peak and around the mountain's northwest side. 1.5 miles after leaving the snowmobile trail, the Bald Mountain Notch Trail reaches the vicinity Rowell Brook and a junction on the right with the Rowell's link (part of the Cohos Trail). To return to the trailhead via a loop, take the trail to the left just before the brook, and descend gradually southbound. This connector meets up with a snowmobile trail after 1.2 miles. A left on the snowmobile trail leads 1.5 miles back to the junction where the Bald Mountain Notch Trail first departed from the snowmobile trail, 1.3 miles from the trailhead.
