Description

The Exeter Conservation Commission acquired the 16.65 acre Irvine Heirs property and a conservation easement over the privately owned 55.35 acre Exeter Country Club golf course in 1989 with grant support from the Land Conservation Investment Program (LCIP).

The Irvine property is a wooded  peninsula with a small area of seasonally mowed field. The young woodland and field perimeter supports sumac, poplar, pine, oak maple, ash, and a few apple trees. The property is a great spot for viewing songbirds, egrets, heron, osprey and eagles and has an old stone foundation that is quietly surrendering to vegetation. There is a small path through the woods to the end of the peninsula which overlooks the tidal Squamscott River and Wheelwright Creek and their associated brackish marsh.

Irvine property is accessible year round and is great for a short fresh air walk, bird watching and provides a unique view of the Squamscott river. Passing through the golf course is permissible when the course is open but please be mindful of golfers and give them the right of way. The golf course is also open to sledding when snow cover is plentiful enough to avoid damaging the greens.

The property has a healthy population of poison ivy so long pants or boots are recommended during the growing season.
