Description

The trail starts at the school and is on mowed grass; it then crosses Main Road and follows a short dirt road to the town Rec Park. There is access to the Huntington River at this park, which is great for wading in summertime. Pick up the path again on the far side of a small picnic area.

The trail is less defined after this. First it follows the Huntington River along the edge of a large mowed hay field. At the end of this field there is a bridge across a wet area into the next mowed field. Here there is a forested area between the path and the river. Across the fields you see the backside of the village of Huntington Center and mountain views beyond.

At the far end of the second field there is a steep, narrow, short little drop into a wooded path along Brushy Brook, a feeder stream into the Huntington River. Bear to the right to follow the path to the end. The path ends up a bank onto the Main Road. You can take the road back to the right and make a loop, but there are no sidewalks and very little shoulder on the road, so it’s much nicer to just turn around and take the path back. If you take a left onto Main Road, it’s a quick detour to the Jubilee Farm’s Organic Vegetable Stand in the big white barn (you can’t miss seeing it from the end of the trail).

Except for one little spot, this is a flat easy trail. It’s a nice little stroll with river and mountain views. It would be good for kids and people who aren’t used to a lot of hiking.

Trail Tips

Leave What You Find
Leave the trail work to the pros: they will add or remove blazes, cairns (stone trail markers), structures, and trail improvements as deemed necessary.

Trailhead Information

From the center of Richmond, turn at the traffic light onto Bridge Street, follow past the Round Church, and stay on the main road which takes a sharp right curve after the church. Huntington Village is about 7 miles down this road. Continue through town. Go about 3 miles to the next town, which is Huntington Center. There are 2 places to park:

  1. Brewster-Pierce School: take a left onto Camel's Hump Road in the middle of town, and then take the next right to the school parking lot. The trail starts on the far side of the playground.
  2. Huntington Recreation Park: past Camel's Hump Road, you'll see the Fire Station on the right; take a right just after it. Follow to the parking area at the end of this road (the road is actually part of the trail from the school).
