The trail to the top of Big Deer Mountain starts just past the New Discovery State Park campground where another trail to Osmore Pond heads due south. Big Deer Mountain trail heads east along a dirt road before turning south and traversing rolling terrain and a marshy area. The trail joins another trail from the bottom of Osmore Pond Loop and then climbs steeply to the summit of Big Deer Mountain for scenic vistas. Return the same way or connect to the pond loop for a longer circuit hike.

Forests, Parks & Recreation District 5: St. Johnsbury DistrictBig Deer Mountain Trailhead is accessed via the New Discovery Vermont State Park entrance on VT-232, 4.3 miles south of US-2 in Marshfield and 9.2 miles north of US-302 in Groton. Memorial Day through Labor Day there is a day use fee for those not staying at state park campgrounds. After Labor Day, off season access is via the North Parking area across the road from New Discovery Campground on VT-232. Follow the trail heading south, it crosses the road onto an unmarked road that also accesses Osmore in the off season. At the end of this unmarked road to the right is Osmore, to the left is Big Deer passing through New Discovery.
