Description

These trails are for walking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. They lie to the west of Stage Road and Leary Road. The southern part of the trail follows an old road, that also serves as a VAST trail in winter. An old stone fence follows the old road, and there are stone foundation remnants of former dwellings and farm buildings. The land is forested and moderately hilly with streams and ponds. It provides an exceptional habitat for a huge range of native animals and flora.

There is a short spur trail that goes through sensitive habitat and is closed seasonally for wildlife protection - be alert for trail closure signs, and respect them.

Dogs are allowed on leash.

Other Information

Trails are on two properties owned and managed by the Jericho Underhill Land Trust (JULT). The Gateway land encompasses 123 acres of prime wildlife habitat, multiple potential home sites, extensive trails and provides access to the Wolfrun Natural Area. Accessed just South of Wolfrun off Stage Road in Bolton through a literal gateway at the entrance to the VAST trail. In 2009, the Jericho Underhill Land Trust purchased The Gateway to add to the Wolfrun Natural Area. This was made possible through federal Forest Legacy funding and over $66,000 in local fundraising.

From Route 2 in Joneville, take Stage Road (north) for 4.2 miles to the intersection with Leary Road. Alternatively take Leary Road or Stage Road south from Nashville Road to where they join. This intersection is your landmark. Trails are accessed from a point either 250 feet south of this intersection (driveway by empty house) or 0.6 miles south of this intersection (VAST trail in winter).

Parking - Seasonal - not plowed: At the northern trailhead, limited parking is available by the side of the driveway across from the empty trailer. At the southern trailhead, there is limited parking a short distance south on the opposite side of Stage Road (the access to Preston Pond).
