Description

At 1,040 feet in elevation, this cedar swamp is surrounded by high hills and a variety of boreal flora. The preserve contains more than two miles of frontage along the North Branch of the Contookcook River, providing excellent upland habitat for moose, bobcat, deer, and bear. Most of this three-mile trail system is easy hiking, however it does have some steep sections.

From the road, follow Loverens Trail into the woods. At 0.1 miles, the boardwalk trail departs to the north and extends 200 feet into the swamp over a thick bed of sphagnum moss. This is a fragile habitat - please do not step off the boardwalk. Continuing on Loverens Trail, you soon come to some huge boulders on the right. At 0.3 miles you will come to a trail junction, you can choose either direction as this is the start of a loop trail that will bring you along the North Branch of the Contookcook River. You'll also find a spur trail to Lookout Point along this loop trail.
