Description

The Jonathan Daniels Trail is a hard-packed recreational trail that follows the course of the Ashuelot River for just under one mile northwest of downtown Keene. The trail starts at the intersection of the Cheshire Rail Trail and Island Street in downtown Keene. It continues north on the sidewalk, crosses West Street and then enters the public park next to the Ashuelot River dam. The trail then continues north along the river for 0.75 miles before intersecting the Appel Way trail and crossing the river on a footbridge.

Bike racks, nearby benches, a flower garden and a family friendly park with a footbridge highlight the river dam area near the south end of the trail. Restrooms are available along West Street.

Other Information

This trail carries both historical and environmental significance. Most notably, the trail runs through the site of the oldest known evidence of human settlement in NH, dating back more than 10,500 years. Blue heron, raptors, waterfowl, songbirds, loons and nighthawks are often observed along this trail.

Trail Tips

Travel on Durable Surfaces
If your bike tires make an indent on the trail surface, it is too wet to ride. Come back when the trails have dried out.
